  Review

Son of bandleader of a dance band, who gave him the passion for music, John Greaves was born in 1950 in Wales. He grew up in Wrexham, north-east of the country, and at the age of 12 he received as a gift a low; a few months after John joined the orchestra of his father, where he played for the next four years, having the opportunity to engage in various musical styles. In the same years also he played in some local groups of pop music. In 1967 he moved to study in the English university town of Cambridge, where in 1969 he joined partedegli Henry Cow. The band was formed last year and within a few years would become one deimaggiori exponents of the avant-progressive British rock. He stayed until 1976 with Henry Cow, that with Greaves They carried several tours and released 5 albums. In the period 1974- 1975, Henry Cow developed a close collaboration with Slapp Happy, which led to the creation of the album Desperate Straights and In Praise of Learning, attributed to both groups. Knowing Peter Blegvad, American guitarist of Slapp Happy, had meanwhile marked a turning point in the career of Greaves, who in 1976 left Henry Cow and went to New York where i Blegvad two joined the singer Lisa Herman and engraved Kew. Rhone., Credited to all three musicians. The album was recorded in the studios of Carla Bley and Michael Mantler, who also made part of the training, and was published by Virgin. Upon returning to England, Greaves and he arranged it composed music for plays, also joined in some performances as an actor. At the beginning of 1978 he entered the training of the National Health and replaced Hugh Hopper in Soft Heap, composed by Elton Dean, Pip Pyle and Alan Gowen. The first solo album was Greaves Accident, while her second
solo album, Parrot Fashion, was released from Europe in 1985. In 1986 he participated in the supergroup Band Michael Mantler,
where they also played Jack Bruce (Cream) and Nick Mason (Pink Floyd). The third solo album was La Petite Bouteille De Linge, recorded between 1989 and 1990 in Paris. In the same period he recorded his first job with the Irish David Cunningham, the eponymous album Greaves-Cunningham released in Japan in 1991. In 1993 he formed, with the collaboration of Elton Dean and Pip Pyle, the first John Greaves Band. The arrangement that made some of their earlier songs was published in what is considered his masterpiece, the album Songs of 1995, where he worked as a singer her admirer Robert Wyatt with whom he had previously collaborated. Among the many subsequent collaborations, to signal participation in 2003 at the concert "Dedicated To You", a tribute to Robert Wyatt which took place in Charleville-Mezieres in France. Greaves in 2004 released the acoustic album Chansons, sung in French by Elise Caron and enhanced by the new collaboration of Wyatt. In 2008 came Greaves Verlaine, in which he set to music poems of the 'accursed poet' Paul Verlaine. In 2011 it was published the continuation of this tribute, the album Greaves Verlaine 2; In both these works, Greaves sings and plays piano. Piacenza is the testimony of a memorable, intense concert held at Nicolini Conservatory of Piacenza, for the series "New Music in Piacenza," in which John recounts in the mood intimate stages the best of his long and legendary career playing the unique Steinway Grand Piano, hosting vocalist d 'vanguard Paola Tagliaferro and Annie Barbazza choirs in "The Song". Of world-famous compositions of a duo with lifelong friend Peter Blegvad the reinvention of Paul Verlaine and Dylan Thomas, the famous Thunderthief, written by John Paul Jones, the former bassist for Led Zeppelin. An album a must for gourmets, registered state of the art and offering a "Sea Song" friend Robert Wyatt, bonus tracks performed in a duo with the young Annie Barbazza during the sound check.
